Leisure and popular culture in transition
In this book Dr. Kando places the problem of leisure in a perspective of world history. He reviews the interrelated terms ‘leisure’, ‘recreation’, ‘play’, and ’the game’, he details various contemporary positions on ‘high’ and mass culture, and he outlines the notion of leisure society that emerged toward the end of the 1950s. These tasks accomplished, Dr. Kando undertakes an encyclopedic review of the history and current status of the various forms of high culture, mass culture, mass leisure, and participant and spectator sports in America. He pays particular attention to variations in leisure time activities by age, sex, race, ethnicity, geography, religion, education, occupation, and social class.
