‘Key Themes in Youth Sport’ is a guide to key concepts in the study of young people’s relationship with sport, exercise and leisure. Drawing on a range of subdisciplines in the study of sport, including sociology, psychology, physical education and sports development, the book offers a basic grounding in the central ideas and debates in contemporary youth sport as well as a departure point for further study. The book is arranged into 45 concise, introductory essays, each of which defines and explains a key concept and its significance for youth sport. The essays cover topics as: ability and talent, drugs, friends, peers, parents and family, gender, ethnicity and disability, health, well-being and physical activity, motivation and participation, youth cultures.
